Local History Resources

The Nunsthorpe public library where the group met for many years has now sadly closed.  Some of the library’s stock has moved to our new venue Centre4, including some fine local history books – not least copies of those produced by the Garden City History group in the past.

Local Library Resources

North East Lincolnshire’s Library Service has a great collection of books and resources available for people interested in family and local history.

You can search the online catalogue for books that may be of interest to you, place a reservation and order the book to be sent to your nearest library for collection. Here’s a few that may be of interest to former residents of Nunsthorpe.

  • Old Nunsthorpe: The ‘Garden City’ Dream – Margaret Gerrish (1998)
  • Garden City History Group: Memories – compiled by Roy & Sheila Ellis (2007)
  • Nunsthorpe – Norman Kirman (2005)

Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Waltham libraries have free access and downloading of many great resources for local and family history including birth. marriage and death records, and census records for the whole country and WWI military records and much more through Ancestry.  The full text of dozens of regional newspapers spaning several centuries can be searched, read and saved on the British Library Newspaper Archive.  You can get full free access to any of these from any of the public library’s computers.

The Grimsby Local History Library holds numerous resources to help you investigate the past and trace your family history.  Including a database of local marriages, microfische copies of parish records of births and marriages and a host of local trade directories and indexes.

The Local History Library is situated in the basement of the Grimsby Central Library building.
